A couple of days ago a client contacted me concerned about whether or not the e-commerce part of his web site was working properly.  So we decided that I would buy one of his products (www.burkesgunoil.com) to make sure his shopping cart was working correctly. Seeing as I often shop on-line, looking at the cart as a ‘shopper’ is easy or me.   For 10 years I have been using Mal’s E-commerce free shopping cart which can be modified to suit the vendor and hooked up to PayPal, etc.  Naturally, I test all shopping carts that I install, but rarely take it to the final purchase at PayPal.  This time I did.  It was as smooth as silk.  I believe ‘flawless’ is the word I’m looking for.  I was so impressed.  Shipping costs were added, tax was added, notification e-mails sent – everything was perfection.

So I wanted to say thank you to Mal’s E-commerce – you make me look good!!

For some reason, for the past 2 weeks, my browser (FireFox) has been crashing regularly.  Things came to a head last week when I was trying to do some research and it kept closing on me every 5 minutes.  That is just not acceptable.  Sooo……. when hunting for something new.  I used to use I.E. until it got ‘improved’  - need I say more…. Changed to FireFox and was absolutely delighted until now.  It seems like everyday someone complains to me about FireFox crashing.  And, of course, you don’t want me to get started on what I think about ‘Bing’.

The solution ended up being Google Chrome.  It downloaded nicely and quickly.  It loaded fast and has a very clean look.  I love my tabs and I want a few of them available when I open up the program each day.  Google Chrome seems to accommodate my needs without hours of configuration.  So far, so good.  If you are having problems with IE or FireFox, you might want to give Chrome a try – can’t hurt.

Have you noticed lately that some web pages are very difficult to read?  Some are 3-4 column small ‘print size’ that I’m sure a lot of people have a real problem reading.  Some web pages have two or three different sizes and font styles and very, very busy.

Well – would you believe a place called ‘arc90′ came up with a little application that you can put on your browser tool bar to make individual web pages easier to read.  I decided to give it a try – very interesting – check it out – I think you will like this little program.  It should be noted, however, that I’m using FireFox and it worked beautifully – not sure about the other browsers.

Decided to take the plunge and ordered PDF software from Nuance. Adobe is just way over the top in pricing – they must be taking lessons from Microsoft. Anyway, Nuance had a special and I decided to take advantage. It is surprisingly good. I can reduce PDF sizes for the web very nicely. Haven’t had a chance to try out all the features but so far I am very happy with this little program. AND, I even got a project management program thrown in…. nice! I love a good deal. Because I recently acquired a new computer, I seem to be continually trying to update and re-load programs which I ‘believe’ I will use. Now we all know that most of the time we don’t use half of what we install – well, maybe half…LOL.

Anyway – I discovered today that I had not installed Thunderbird. I normally try to have as many e-mail programs or browsers as I can so I can test for clients. Sooooo … went hunting and downloaded the latest version of Thunderbird and checked out a couple of the add-on’s now available for that program while I was at it.

Well…. what a surprise! I rarely use Outlook except as an address book and calendar because I dislike the fact that Microsoft tries to ‘hide’ the data. For some reason, Microsoft insists on complicating this process – it really shouldn’t be that difficult to find your e-mails stored in your computer. For that reason, I use Eudora e-mail. There is finally a new version in ‘beta’ but have no idea how long it will take for it to be released – been waiting over 2 years so far.

The good news is that with the add-on’s now available for Thunderbird, you might just be able to stop using Outlook, get rid of some spam, have a to-do list, calendar -don’t quote me on this as I have not tried it all out. BUT I was very impressed and am actually considering using Thunderbird as my main e-mail program. We don’t want to talk about how many years I have used Eudora – I am a true fan of that program…. but……the new Thunderbird is very enticing. Maybe…. I’ll just give it a little try….. maybe…

Every once in a while I come across a company that provides an excellent product and, best of all, actually communicates ‘direct’ to the customer…. how about that!!

Likno (www.likno.com) is one of them. I have no telephone number to contact them, have no idea where they are – never have had a problem that required me to call them. Honest! I fouind their menu system several years ago. Very reasonable and worked like a charm. Their program is still reasonable and each update makes the program better and better – unlike some other programs that upgrade and become worse. Nice thing is that they do not ‘gouge’ their customers.

Here is a sample of how they run their business. Yesterday (Thursday) I discovered that they were creating a new software application that would be perfect for one of my clients. It wasn’t ready yet, but I could be put on a ‘list’ to be notified – it was due within the next couple of days and I could, if I wanted, purchase it right away which is what i did. I replied thanking them and said I would gladly wait. 2 hours later, as promised, I received another e-mail with a link to download my new software.

So a company that creates great software, does not rip off their customers, actually is true to their word – thought you should know.

(now I just have to figure out how to use this new software – LOL)

Awhile ago I added a survey (or voting poll) to my web site to see how they worked. I chose PollDaddy which was very adequate considering I was using their free version.

Well… because more and more people want ‘interaction’, I decided to go hunting for a free program or relatively inexpensive ‘poll’ service online. I am willing to pay and thought it might be nice to buy a program that I could use on a regular basis – I just don’t want to get ripped off.

So I started my ‘research’ yesterday – all day….. and today…. most of the day. It was an eye opener to say the least. I wish I could list some really good ‘easy to use’ poll services or a couple of great inexpensive programs, but after much time and frustration, I ended up back with my original service at Poll Daddy. The really good news is that, to my great surprise, PollDaddyhas upgraded their free account to allow for ‘personal’ style design- perfect!!! Being able to change the style to fit my web site was just what I was looking for.

Well…. had problems trying to download the anti-virus program I originally wanted to try, so decided to see how good Kaspersky really was. (www.kaspersky.com) One of the other highly rated anti-virus programs actually uses Kaspersky ‘engine’ to run their service …. interesting.

I downloaded and installed a short while ago and, naturally, an hour is not enough time to make a judgement call… but, so far my computer appears just a little bit happier.. Yes, I know… it is a computer, it does not get happy….. wanna bet?

With all the travelling I have been doing over the past year, one of the things that bothers me is that I am very familiar with my ‘own’ home page in IE (or Firefox) – and then, when visiting, I am on someone else’s machine and lost! Well… I get lots of newsletter, one of which is from techcoachforcoaches.com. Yesterday the Tech Coach mentioned a site where you could list your favourites(thumbnails) for easy access from any computer.
